What is the Montessori Philosophy?
Still in practice today, the Montessori philosophy is an educational method developed throughout the early 20th century by Dr. Maria Montessori. Instead of routine classes set at an established pace, a Montessori School focuses on the individual's own growth and development. Learning occurs in a number of ways, from hands-on discovery and uninterrupted work sessions to mixed-age classrooms where older students become mentors.
The Five Principles of the Montessori Method
Dr. Montessori experimented with her ideas and refined them over time. Eventually, five key elements resolved themselves and became the backbone for her pedagogy.
1. Respect for the Child
Children must be free to make choices and learn for themselves. Their concentration is important and should not be interrupted. If a conflict arises, teachers need to resolve it peacefully and without judgment.
2. An Absorbent Mind
Dr. Montessori emphasized that children are thinking beings. They have the biological need to learn from their surroundings. All their senses are constantly absorbing and interpreting knowledge.
3. Sensitive Periods
According to natural development, children have sensitive periods in which they are more apt to learn certain skills. Teachers must be able to identify these moments in a student's life and provide them the necessary resources to further their knowledge.
4. A Prepared Environment
The children's surroundings should be conducive to this particular ideology of learning. A Montessori School should always provide experiences and materials to encourage their freedom and curiosity.
5. Self-Education
An absolute belief is that children can educate themselves. Specially-trained teachers have a role in guidance, encouragement, and oversight. But overall, it is the student who is doing both the educating and learning.
