Why is Language Arts Important in Education?

Apr 28, 2022 Angie Johnson

Education has become an increasingly diverse and globalized world, emphasizing language skills. Language is the ability to communicate with other people using words, whether spoken or written. There are many different languages spoken worldwide, and they all play a part in education in different ways. Here are some reasons we at Mountain West Montessori Academy view language as an integral part of learning.

Instructors in Montessori education express what we mean with clarity to our students so that they can understand and learn from us. In the same way, when students are communicating their ideas to us, we need to be able to understand them. If there is a disconnect between the language used by instructors and students, it can make it difficult for students to understand what is being taught.

Helps Students Connect with Content

When students read text or listen to a lecture, they often do so in a second language. If they do not have a strong command of the language, they may have difficulty understanding the content. This can lead to frustration and confusion and ultimately make it harder for them to learn.
Montessori education solves this issue by providing students with content in their first language. We do this by incorporating bilingual education into the curriculum or providing materials such as books, articles, and videos in the students' first language. Additionally, our instructors can support students by clarifying concepts and providing a further explanation in the students' first language when necessary.

Encourages Critical Thinking

To think critically, students need to understand and analyze the information presented. If they cannot understand the language, they will have difficulty engaging with it. As a result, they may not be able to see different perspectives, make connections, or ask questions.
Students in Montessori education are encouraged to think critically about the information presented. Our instructors create a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable expressing their ideas and asking questions. Additionally, our curriculum promotes critical thinking skills by incorporating activities and tasks that encourage students to explore different perspectives and make connections.

Language arts are essential in education because it helps students connect with their instructors and their learning content. It also encourages critical thinking, which is necessary for success in school and life.
