Why is Music Important in Education?
Music education for children encourages success in life, both in school and after graduation. Even early in children's development, music accelerates brain development. At Mountain West Montessori Academy, we incorporate music into the Montessori education of our students to help them thrive throughout their lives. Students sing songs, play music together, and learn musical principles.
There are three particular ways that music education helps students.
Music Helps Children Develop Creative Skills
Some disciplines always have one correct answer, like mathematics or science. Music, on the other hand, is open to interpretation. It's more creative and open-ended. Because of this, music helps children to develop creative skills. Children learn to play songs or make up songs or improvisations of their own.
At Mountain West Montessori Academy, we include music in our programs to foster students' creative growth.
Music Exposes Children to Diverse Cultures
Children learn to appreciate other cultures early in life by exposure to diverse musical traditions. They develop an open-minded worldview and appreciation for people who are not like them, giving them more opportunities for success in an increasingly global world. Music connects people in an emotional, personal and social way, so it helps students to appreciate other people and their cultures.
Music Increases Performance in All Disciplines
According to the University of Kansas, children who learn to play music and sing have higher scores in other disciplines. Music is a fundamental cornerstone of the curriculum in schools providing a Montessori education. Mountain West students have attained scores 70 points higher than average on the national accreditation review. We know that music education is a contributing factor.
Our Montessori learning environment allows children to learn at their own pace. We enable students to focus on studies that most interest them. By incorporating music into our students' educations, we help them grow to be well-rounded adults.
