Why is Social Studies Important in Education?
Social studies take a closer look at individuals and how they relate to the world around them. Learning to interact with the world helps children become good citizens. By doing so, they develop empathy, sympathy, and compassion. This is why we value social studies at Montessori education as a core part of our curriculum.
Why Social Studies?
Social studies provide opportunities for the students in our institution to develop skills and attitudes that engage them in society in an informed and active way. As such, students learn about themselves and the world around them. Therefore, they can respect both the individual and the community in general. Since we're all living in a world that values democracy and individual rights, incorporating social studies in education at Mountain West Montessori Academy allows our students to understand the world around them from an early age.
Social Studies in Montessori Education?
Now, you might be thinking, "studying Social studies sounds important, but may seem a bit complicated for my child's education this early on."
However, social studies is not a complex concept. You also began to learn about social studies at around the same age. Here at Mountain West Montessori Academy, we believe it is essential to incorporate social studies in the early stages of education by learning geography, history, and civics. Simply learning the name of the state you live in and the neighboring areas is a part of social studies. It widens the students' perspective and lets them become aware of a wider society and collective of people. Encouraging them to learn about the president, elections, and the country's history gives them a sense of community, belonging, and identity as a part of the collective.
Even this early on, social studies will help students become better able to develop a sense of self and affirm their place as a part of society.
