Why is Art Important in Education?

Art

An excellent education isn't about memorizing facts--it's about learning, creating, seeing new perspectives, and gaining life lessons. Mountain West Montessori Academy incorporates art into our program to ensure a well-rounded education. Your children learn skills that they'll use in every subject--and later when they enter the workforce.

Art Helps Children Think Creatively

Not every issue has a single logical answer, like a math problem. Drawing, painting, writing, and playing music teaches children to think creatively, which helps them find unique solutions to problems and assignments. As PBS points out, society only progresses when people invent new ideas and methods instead of sticking to outdated instructions.

On a smaller scale, creative thinking teaches children to think for themselves, view different perspectives, explore new talents and express themselves through projects. Children who think creatively are more self-reliant because they don't need instructions for basic tasks. This shows them how to be independent adults.

Art Improves Your Child's Academics

Studies have shown that Montessori schools that teach fine arts have higher attendance rates, improved standardized test scores, fewer disciplinary actions, and higher graduation percentages. Art gives children the chance to express themselves in ways that aren't possible with traditional classes. When your child has fun and feels like they're being heard, they're more willing to pay attention, stay in school and eventually graduate.

Art Celebrates Diversity

Studying art at a Montessori school means learning about different cultures, historical figures, and time periods. Instead of limiting themselves to a single perspective, students discover a wide range of concepts and ideas. They see themselves represented in art and learn more about their heritage. In fact, schools often tie artwork into lessons about history, psychology, and social issues.

Our Montessori school provides a collaborative environment that caters to multiple learning styles. Reach out to Mountain West Montessori Academy to learn more about our comprehensive art program and how to enroll your child.
