Why Is The Montessori Method Successful?
One of the most common questions we are asked here at Mountain West Montessori Academy is "Why Is The Montessori Method Successful?". This post should clear up any questions about Montessori School and what makes the Montessori Method an excellent way for children to learn.
One reason Montessori Education has been proven to be so effective in teaching children is the belief that children learn better when they have the freedom to discover and learn independently. The traditional method of teaching found in American Schools does not work for every type of learner. Traditionally, most schools are quick to dismiss a student who cannot "fall in line" with the standardized teaching method.
In a Montessori School, students are given the freedom to discover their education at their own pace. Allowing students the chance to discover things on their own encourages learning and development at a speed that is appropriate for that child's education. It's one of the reasons American Montessori International lists it in its educational philosophy.
Another benefit of education in a Montessori School is the use of classrooms that are not grade-specific. These multi-aged classrooms offer a wonderful opportunity for students to develop individual skills in a way the is comfortable to them, as opposed to a traditional schooling method, which requires a minimum level of knowledge before progressing ahead to the next grade. The American Montessori Society encourages these types of classrooms. As they say, it leads to the development of citizenship and the ability for peers to exchange leadership roles within learning.
