MWMA is excited to announce the addition of an elementary Gifted & Talented identification and enrichment program this year! In our middle school, we have long offered Honors courses and have added our first AP course this year, AP Human Geography. Now we will be providing some options for our elementary students as well.

We will screen students who qualify by teacher and parent recommendation, reading level, standardized testing, and student survey. If you feel that your student may qualify, please talk to their teacher. We feel that all of our students have gifts and talents, many of them academic, and recognize the existence of “twice exceptional” learners (who may have academic gifts side-by-side with other challenges).

Hello! My name is Mary Ruth Wiggins. I’m excited to be a part of Mountain West Academy. I have worked with children in many settings over the years and I fully support any educational philosophy that values choice and embraces the child as an individual. I look forward to seeing the Montessori philosophy in action.
My most recent work experience is the year I spent at University of Utah in The Clinical Trials Office supporting both medical and public health research. I learned many new things, met some amazing people and enjoyed seeing the world through a different lens. However, I found that I missed the satisfaction that comes from watching young minds light up when you are working in education.
I graduated quite a few years ago from Southern Utah University with B.A. in Sociology and French and have more recently completed a full series of Reading Endorsement Literacy Instruction courses. When I was just out of college, I worked in the youth corrections system, in therapeutic group homes and in special education behavioral classrooms. While I was raising my own children I worked at an International Baccalaureate charter school supporting struggling readers. I was also their intervention coordinator and helped develop their enrichment program for accelerated readers. I am passionate about literacy and a big stack of children’s books makes my heart beat with excitement. Needless to say you can frequently find me at the local library.
On a personal note, I love wandering through museums and historical sites, exploring national parks, camping, hiking, cooking and eating adventurously with my husband of 22 years and my 3 very intelligent and hilarious children who are almost grown.
